Kabara still hopeful:Gauna
The Kabara cricket team aim to take the 2020 Association Cup title back to the islands in Lau.
Despite losing two games so far to Ono-i-Lau and Suva, team manager Ilaitia Gauna is hopeful.
He said the normally play cricket in Kabara every Friday from where they selected 15 players.
He said Kabara last played in the tournament in 2018 where they won the Plate title.
They are in Pool One with Lakeba, Suva, Komo, Cicia and Ono-i-Lau. Gauna was grateful to Cricket Fiji in reviving the game in Suva and bringing back the competition, which was not held last year. He indicated that the 2020 champions will host next year’s tournament.
“This is the eighth year of our par
ticipation in the Association Cup,” he said.
“And it is good to see that the level of the game improves every year. “We have brought a young side this year, with our youngest being 17 years and we want to win it,” Gauna said.
Kabara is laced with four national Under-19 reps including Jone Lupe who led the team to Japan in 2019 for the World Cup Qualifiers.
The four U19 reps are Lupe, Ledua
Gauna, Apete Soko and Peni Dautu. Lupe said: “We need to improve on our fielding and catches as the competition is very tight.
“It was in the Association Cup comp where I was spotted, so I will do my best in this tournament so I could represent the U19 and national team as well.”
The Association Cup tournament will end on October 30.
