Man, 24, in Custody for Alleged Impersonation
A24-year-old University of Fiji student, who is alleged to have impersonated as a Government lawyer and obtained $7500 from people, has been remanded in custody by the Magistrates Court in Suva.
Josefa Saronitokatoka Volitiviti Kolinio Radrudru Ravoka, appeared before Magistrate Asanga Bodaragama, yesterday represented by lawyers Asilika Rogers and Tevita Cagilaba from Toganivalu Law.
He is charged with one count of personating a public officer, one count of giving false information to a public officer, two counts of obtaining financial advantage by deception, and four counts of or misleading documents.
For the charge of personating a public officer, it is alleged that on October 5, 2020, at Suva, Ravoka impersonated as director legal for the Attorney-General’s office.
For the charge of giving false information to a public officer, it is alleged that on October 5, 2020, in Suva, Ravoka gave his name as Josefa Ralulu to a Police officer.
For the charges of obtaining financial advantage by deception, it is alleged that on October 5, 2020, in Suva, Ravoka obtained $7500 from two complainants by deception promising to give land hire permits.
For the charges of false or misleading documents, it is alleged that on October 5, 2020, in Suva, Ravoka false produced invoices and agreements with falsified Government stamps engraved with Attorney-General’s Chambers.
Police prosecutor Woman Police Constable, Susan Radinisau, objected to Ravoka’s bail on the grounds that he had a previous conviction of burglary and theft and that there were more allegations against Ravoka to be investigated.
Magistrate Bodaragama refused bail for Ravoka and said that the amount involved in the matter was high as well as the charges against the accused were very serious.
The matter has been adjourned for mention on November 5.
