‘PRB tenants who stay for generations not encouraged’
Premila Kumar reminded tenants not to take advantage of housing arragement, assistance
Some families living in Public Rental Board ( PRB) Flats have been living there for generations, it has been revealed. A surprised Minister for Local Government, Housing and Community Development, Premila Kumar, said the PRB Flats were not a permanent home for tenants.
“It is not allowed to live in the flats for more than one generation. You need to move out, and allow others the opportunity, especially for those who are less fortunate than you,” Ms Kumar said.
She made the comment after inspecting the flats at the Vunimoli PRB in Labasa.
The minister urged tenants to work with the Housing Authority officials when they inspect and conduct assessments.
“The PRB premises is for low income earners who are living on a Government subsidy,” she said.
“It is a fact that not everyone can own a home, therefore the PRB Flats are provided for those low income earners to save some money,” she said.
In addition, Ms Kumar said there were different accommodation provisions for different income levels.
“We will be assessing the tenants and you need to give the correct disclosures,” he said.
“Failure to provide the correct disclosures will see you charged under the Crimes Act.”
Ms Kumar said while there may be a few problems and challenges within the PRB Flats, they will try their best to provide a safer place for all tenants.
“There are rules and policies that operate within the PRB premises, when everyone follows that, it is good for everyone,” she said.
