Waqavotuwale Dances his Way to Top Achievements
Being exposed to arts at an early age has contributed to a distinguished achievement for Navitalai Waqavotuwale. He was among the 17 students who graduated with a diploma in dance certificate from the Nadibased Conservatorium of Dance (COD) Institution.
The 25-year old dancer scooped the valedictorian award. Originally from Vuna Village in Taveuni, Mr Waqavotuwale started dancing at the age of 16 at the VOU school and has since joined the company as a dancer, choreographer and teacher.
He was trained in ballet, contemporary, jazz and traditional Pacific dance styles.
In August of 2014, he represented Fiji in an indigenous dance residency programme in Santa Fe, New Mexico with world-renowned Native American choreographer, Rulan Tangen, and the Dancing Earth Company. Mr Waqavotuwale said it was a great opportunity for him to observe and absorb the lifestyles and behaviour of professional artists.
“As the youngest participant with relatively lesser experience, I was so fortunate to be exposed to artists who did me the great favour of challenging my perspective of dance as a mere technical and physical activity,” he said. He said his parents who are both teachers with musical background has motivated him in his passion and involvement in the Fijian dance industry.
“Ever since I was young I was exposed to artistic classes especially music. After high school I participated in small dance activities and theater production.
“My parents were both very hardworking and dedicated. I have learnt a lot from them.” Furthermore, the former International School student acknowledged his teachers for the impartation of their knowledge and support.
Meanwhile the Awards night was at Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa on Friday night, November 13.
