Alisi Tells: My Favourite Places

Former Miss South Pacific and Miss Hibiscus, Alisi Rabukawaqa, shares her favourite spots in Fiji. Alisi hails from Bua and is married, with four children.

She works as a project liaison officer with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN),Oceania regional office based in Suva.

She is a passionate environmentalist. Ms Rabukawaqa has suggested people find places which are affordable and to support local eco-tourism.

What’s one place you’d take every visitor to in Fiji, and why?

It would depend on what they wanted to see.

For visitors, if they would want to learn more of Fiji, the Fiji Museum would be a good place they could visit, and take a walk around the place as there is a lot of history.

It would also be nice for visitors to go to Levuka, visit the heritage sites.

I have had friends that wanted to see a really cool place, and we have taken them to see the waterfalls in Wailoku.

What’s your secret backyard favourite spot? I have always liked the foreshore area beside Grand Pacific Hotel and the Suva Civic Centre car park area near the seawall.

It is starting to sound like date spots for couples, but it is actually a nice spot that has rocks where people can sit and hang around.

If you are doing your walks along the seawall, there is also another place along the Nasese foreshore at the mangrove flats. When the tide gets really low and dries up, people can go and hang out in those mangrove areas - it’s so beautiful.

What’s your favourite place in Fiji for a coffee/pie?

I would suggest the Tea shop located on Marks Street, that sells egg and bun, and also at the Suva market food stall opposite the bus stand where I would visit for their pikelets - it tastes delicious.

What’s one Fiji spot on the top of your bucket list?

I had always wanted to visit all the provinces in Fiji, however, I have not done that yet.

I am still trying to visit Kadavu.

I have not visited all the islands in Lau and Lomaiviti,these islands are on my to do list.
