TFiji Police Force will continue to work with the Ministry of Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation and partners on the protection of children. Through the Child Protection System, Police will strengthen their capacity in raising community awareness to mitigate child protection risk, early intervention, timely and effective response to child abuse and neglect.
Deputy Commissioner of Police, Itendra Nair, made the comment yesterday during the launch of the Revised Inter-Agency Guidelines on
Child Abuse and Neglect in Suva. DCP Nair said the revised interagency Guidelines outline the commitment of key stakeholders and partners to work for the best interest of the child at national, communal and grass root level.
“The Guidelines also strengthen our partnership with our partners and stakeholders; a reminder that child protection is everyone’s responsibility,” DCP Nair said.
“The Fiji Police Force acknowledges our essential role in investigating crimes against children, responding to children in conflict with the law, in a child- sensitive manner and partnering with the Ministry of Women, Poverty and Children Alleviation and partners in assisting to address the offending behavior,” he said.
He said significant steps have been on-going to strengthen specialised handling of children’s cases, including the presence of Juvenile Bureau and the Child Abuse and Sexual Offences Unit, in all Police divisions. “The Juvenile Bureau actively supports Police work on the protection of children and support at-risk adolescents through the Blue Light programme.
“The collaboration between partners will ensure that the right steps and approach are taken and our services continue to improve for the children of our nation.”
