Licensed electricians Satish Nakched, Suva

This week the Energy Fiji Limited CEO rightly stated that many of the licensed house electricians are colluding with the bogus ones where they for a fee signs on the application forms for new house wiring which they do not do.

Another unaccounted threat is that in many contracting companies the owner is the only licensed electrician and could have untrained team who works under his direction without supervision.

In reality many who work in an electrical field are not certified electricians but carry out the work without going through any formal education in the field and may execute electrical work of poor quality and may result in an adverse situation.

A licensed electrician may be doing a number of jobs simultaneously and may sent out his untrained assistance to the other job sites and on the completion of the work may merely sign the form to satisfy the other requirement before the electricity is provided to the premise.

This is a huge risk as any slight mistake in the wiring can burn the building down. I believe that there is no monitoring system implemented by the regulators where the job sites are randomly checked to see whether a licensed electrician is on site to supervise the work in progress.

The Minister for Local Government in her pre-Diwali safety message said that in the past two months thirty-three homes were destroyed by fire amounting to $2.3 million in damage and 162 people displaced.

She further stated that 35.4 per cent of the fires were electrical related. I believe there is a need of a higher level of compliance and a robust mechanism in place to detect such abuse.

Superb Suva Bhagwanji Bhindi, Suva

Congratulations to the Ram Sami Suva Rugby team for winning the Skipper Cup final to reign supreme over the other provincial teams.

Making it a triple feat with excellence, planning and thorough preparation.

Their strong forward play and sublime backline skills were brilliant to watch on national TV.

Ram Sami Suva rose to the challenge of the Highlanders surviving the intense heat and rising pressures.

Their determination, will power and great defence repelled the attacks of the opponent. Credit must also be given to the Naitasiri team for a brilliant and great performance. Congratulations to Ram Sami Suva Team, officials, the players, coaches, manager, fans and supporters for winning the Skipper Cup. They have set the example for the rest of the teams.
