A34-year- old cane cutter of Labasa has been sentenced to 12 years imprisonment for raping his biological sister.

The offender had pleaded guilty to the charge of rape of his 15-year-old sister. On July 29, 2019, the victim, her twin sister and the offender had accompanied their parents to attend a village funeral. Then they decided to go for a swim in a nearby river at around 8am.

While at the river, the offender told the victim’s twin sister to wait for them under the tree while he and the victim went in search of watermelon at a nearby farm. When they reached the farm which was about 300 metres from the river, the offender pulled the victim by her right hand which caused her to fall to the ground.

The offender then had sexual intercourse with her without her consent for about 10 minutes. When he was done, the offender then told the victim not to tell her mother. At this point in time, the offender had in his possession a kitchen knife.

The victim returned to where her sister was waiting for them by the river. The two of them then returned to the house which they were staying in.

The victim told her mother what had happened. The offender fled after knowing that the matter had been reported to the Police. He was on the run until he was arrested on

October 25, 2020.

Justice Daniel Goundar, while sentencing the offender, said the offender breached the trust that the victim reposed on him as her brother.

“Instead of protecting his sister, the offender violated her body for his own sexual gratification,” Justice Goundar said.

The offender has been ordered to serve eight years of his sentence before he could apply for parole.
