Bank employees union awaits statements to see how banks going
Most financial statements of banks will be out by the end of this year. Through these financial statements, the Fiji Bank and Finance Sector Employees Union (FBFSEU), will have a better view of the impact and effects COVID-19 on the financial sector.
The union’s national secretary Salesh Naidu in an interview after
their Annual General Meeting for Vanua Levu division at the Friendly North Inn in Labasa said over the years banks have made millions of dollars in profit.
“This means banks shouldn’t use this pandemic as an excuse to reduce terms and conditions for their employees,” Mr Naidu said. “When we will get the financials, definitely we will carry out our assessment and see what ahead can be done.”
He said it’s good for banks to make good profit.
Nine months
“During these nine months, we have seen that no one has been laid off in the finance sector,” he said. “There are some who are taking cases of retirement and we have been following up with them.
“Also we have been having continuous meetings with banks where we discuss what best can be done for the employees.”
Some banks are suggesting op
tions on annual increment and bonus.
“My advice to the members is to stay put, do the right things and move on,” he said.
“The good news is that three companies internationally have developed a vaccine and probably things will work out well for us soon.” There are about 1500 union members.
Meanwhile, Mr Naidu said the members have been informed during the AGM that they have made a
profit of $115,000 for the 2019 financial year.
He is confident that in 2020 the figures will be better.
The new President elected for Vanua Levu branch is Rajneel Maharaj who is also the President of Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North and president of Labasa Lions Club.
The Suva AGM will be held on December 12, 2020.
