THE WALK FROM DARIA TO COGEA WITH LOVE

- LAISA LUI LABASA Edited by Rosi Doviverata

Stories of resilience and pure generosity have emerged after category five Tropical Cyclone Yasa left behind a trail of destruction in most parts of the Northern Division.

In the district of Wainunu in the Bua Province, the devastation by TC Yasa is evident in the seven villages: Daria, Nakorotiki, Nakawakawa, Cogea, Navakasali, Nadua and Saolo.

Cogea Village was perhaps the worst hit. Out of 37 houses in the village, many were completely destroyed. The river nearby had burst its banks and as a result many of the homes were washed away.

This prompted Daria village circuit members of the Methodist Church to gather what they could including food and clothing. These were packed into plastic bags, bags and sacks for the hour and a half walk to Cogea village under the scorching heat. This was a day after the cyclone.

Most of the circuit members were youths. While some of them had their own homes damaged and others destroyed, they saw the need in Cogea Village much greater than their own.

Such acts of courage and generosity, unbeknownst to many, can help carry through those badly affected by TC Yasa.

It is a reminder that together, we can make it through.
