- Susana Hirst-Tuilau Edited by Naisa Koroi

Duadua Beach Resort owners Savita and Latchman Gounden have been busy over Christmas organising relief packages for Tropical Cyclone Yasa victims.

While others were celebrating with family and friends, they gathered volunteers to help pack up supplies to send over from Auckland, New Zealand.

A container is expected to be shipped here by the middle of January.

Ms Gounden said: “We can’t really give the money value because most of the items are donated by the donors of Auckland.

“We sending 40 foot container.” One of those donors is Joeli Vidiri, a retired Fijian rugby union footballer who also played for the New Zealand All Blacks.

Items collected range from mattresses, duvet, household items, school books, school bags, medical supplies, first aid kits, towels, etc. Since COVID-19, the owners of Duadua Beach Resort have opted to remain in New Zealand while they trust their staff to run their resort in Rakiraki.

Fortunately, the resort did not suffer any damage during TC Yasa, confirms Ms Gounden.

The resort was quickly opened a few days after to give them time to clean out the debris.

Although they are still 70 per cent operational, guests can still expect a 100 per cent service.
