The Commissioner Northern’s Office yesterday organised a clean-up campaign to fight against Leptospirosis, Typhoid, Dengue and Diarrhoea (LTDD) in the Vanua Levu.

Commissioner Northern Uraia Rainima said the clean-up campaign was to help the Ministry of Health in the fight against LTDD, due to the recent increase in the typhoid cases in Macuata (11 cases) and in Cakaudrove (two cases). Typhoid cases remain at 13. Ministry of Health and Medical Services is assisting the Commissioner Northern’s Office in the clean-up campaign with spraying carried out in red spot areas.

They are also distributing hygiene kits, targeting red spot areas for the water and sanitation projects and looking at the water supply

The ministry is constantly testing the quality of water used in the red spot areas with the help of Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADAR) with the water tanks and Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) connecting filters that can clean the water before it goes out to the community.

Mr Rainima also acknowledged the assistance of the Red Cross Society.

“We’re trying our very best not to only look at the red spot areas where the cases are coming from but also surrounding areas,” Mr

Rainima said.

“A team was sent out in the communities during the week to raise the alarm of the clean-up campaign so that households can start their own clean up and leave the rubbish on the road side to be collected by the team.

“While we have our rehabilitation programme for TC Yasa, today is a day out those that are not engaged in the activity for the day to go tour and help communities in the cleanup,” he said.

Mr Rainima thanked the organisation from Local Government for providing bags and gloves through Labasa Town Council.
