A-G, TSLB meet on GPA

- Fonua Talei Edited by Jonathan Bryce

The Tertiary Scholarship and Loans Board (TSLB) met with the Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum yesterday for an update on the raising of Grade Point Average requirements and suspension of some students under the National Topper’s Scheme.

After a meeting with students and stakeholders last week, the A-G directed the TSLB Board and its chief executive officer Bobby Maharaj to urgently review its unilateral and arbitrary decision.

When questioned yesterday on speculations that Mr Maharaj’s employment is on the line, Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said he does not buy into speculations.

In a press statement sent last week, he said TSLB had made the hasty decision to suspend students under the National Topper’s Scheme by raising GPA requirements without Government’s approval or consultation. As a result some students have found themselves unfairly suspended. “Rather than rush to change the GPA requirements and suspend those students, the TSLB should have consulted with Government, educational institutions, and students. That error should be remedied by the TSLB as soon as possible,” he said.
