695 People Charged With Serious NonSexual Crimes Last Year
There were 695 people charged with a total of 759 separate counts of serious, non-sexually-related criminal offences, from January 1, 2020 to December 31, 2020.
This was revealed by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) and relates to the number of formal indictments (Information) filed in the High Courts of Fiji by the Director of Public Prosecutions.
The yearly statistics for sexual violence offences were recorded separately.
Of the 695 people charged, 67 were Police officers. The serious offence counts for each month were: January (61), February (53),
March (65), April (45), May (42), June (79), July (98), August (67), September (53), October (76), November (74), December (46).
There were 456 victims of the 759 separate serious offences. Of the 456 victims, there were 53 offences where the accused and victim were related to one another.
A total of 71 cases were withdrawn after discontinuances (Nolle Prosequi) were filed in 2020.
