Arobust local economy is key for community livelihoods and food security says Minister for Local Government, Housing and Community Development, Premila Kumar.
She made the remark during the opening ceremony of the United Nations Women Markets for Change High Level Validation Workshop yesterday.
The project’s first phase started in 2014 will conclude in June this year. The multi-faceted approach of the Market for Change project has assisted in areas of economic development, food security, health, humanitarian assistance and disaster resource recovery.
The project is largely funded by the Australian Government. Ms Kumar said the workshop was an important step to ensure that they continued this collaborative
approach by development partners with the Government, key stakeholders, beneficiaries and donors on development projects.
She was grateful to UN Women for being so committed in its intention to see that the next stage of
development projects are designed, planned and implemented in line with national policies.
Ms Kumar said the Fijian Government was committed to support the informal sector therefore projects such as Markets for Change were
welcome initiatives.
The Markets for Change (M4C) project in Fiji is a UN Women project in partnership with the UN Development Programme. It is a six year initiative aimed at ensuring that marketplaces in rural and urban areas in Fiji, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu are safe, inclusive and non-discriminatory environments, promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment.
