Big Move For Our Olympians
In a space of 24 hours, Flying Fijians forwards Leone Nakarawa and Viliame Mata have sealed their contracts with top rugby clubs in Europe.
In a big move yesterday Nakarawa signed up with Ulster Rugby, a professional club in Ireland while Mata opted to stay loyal with Edinburgh Rugby. This was after many months of speculation as other top clubs chased for his signature.
Both players played for the Fiji Men’s Sevens team that won the gold medal at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
In congratulating the players, Fiji Rugby Union chief executive officer John O’Connor said the players have maintained their high standard of performance.
“For Mata to re-sign with Edinburgh and Nakarawa to join Ulster, expose them to top level rugby especially in strong forward play,” O’Connor said.
“They are key members of the Flying Fijians squad. Their exposure is going to benefit our upcoming forwards who are coming through the development process. This is going to benefit Fiji Rugby.”
