Stay Under Speed Limits, Drivers Urged
Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) is requesting members of the public to please adhere to the 30km/h speed limit in place on Ratu Mara Road. “To keep the road users, pedestrians and our workers safe, a temporary 30km/h speed limit is in place through the worksite and nearby,” says acting chief executive officer, Kamal Prasad.
He said cones have been placed to manage the flow of traffic in a safe and efficient manner. However they have seen that some drivers are manoeuvring over the cones.
“This is dangerous and we are urging motorists to please be vigilant and drive safely,” he said.
DMr Narayan said it was also important for drivers to undertake defensive driving tests.
riving schools play an important role in educating new drivers who eventually become full time drivers, about road safety.
The course gives drivers basic knowledge on how to maneuver a vehicle safely.
Fiji Driving Schools Association national president Deo Narayan emphasised there is also a need for more awareness on road safety so drivers and pedestrians can understand the risks.
“I think it’s long overdue that Land Transport Authority (LTA) and Fiji Police, together with Fiji Driving Schools Association conduct lectures in schools, do awareness programmes for driving on Fiji roads and how to behave with other drivers,” Mr Narayan said. Mr Narayan said it was also important for drivers to undertake defensive driving tests.
“Defensive driving test is important because it re-emphasises road safety and traffic regulations, teaching new drivers how
to maneuver road hazards on roads because some drivers do not obey the traffic regulations; they should not be speeding.
“LTA should put e-copies of these books online to be easily access to members of the public including drivers and pedestrians,” he said.
Some road safety practices
■If you spot a vehicle in a hurry, do not be obstinate and yield the right of way even if you are legally right in refusing. While the other driver might be being a bully in claiming you give way, it’s better to let him through. Do not block the path of the vehicle by moving in front of it or impede its passage in any way.
■Every pedestrian should cross from the appropriate foot crossing.
■Do not cross unless pedestrian crossing light say so (green).
■Everybody should be vigilant on the road.
