Head Boy: I Wish My Grandmother Was Alive to Witness This
Suva Grammar School head boy only wished his grandmother was alive to see him attend the prestigious Suva school and become the student council leader.
Gabriel Veigaunavinaka said: “My grandmother always wanted her children to attend this school but because back in the days it was attended by the expatriates and those of high status they couldn’t.
“I am the first in the family to attend this school from my paternal side and I wish my grandmother was present to witness this day. Not only did I get the chance to attend this school, but I became the head boy,” he said.
“I attended Jai Narayan College for Year 9 and Year 10 and because I want to become a lawyer, I had to take History, so I came to this school.”
“I was never a prefect or deputy head boy for this school but to be elected as the head boy is a privilege because they saw a leader in me.
“I want to encourage the students that we are all leaders and have our part to play.”
The 17-year-old hails from Mualevu Village in Vanuabalavu, Lau with maternal links to Yaroi Village in Matuku, Lau.
For head girl Vakamino Vulaca, said: “A leader is not someone who orders people but someone who can see how things can be improved and who rallies people to move towards a better vision.
“Leaders can work towards making their vision a reality while putting people first.
“Being leaders does not mean you should be harsh on the students, especially when it comes to discipline.
“I will always be ready to listen to students when they need someone to listen to them and not judge them.
“It is always good to be a good listener and never be judgmental towards anyone’s situation, because everyone has a story of their own.” More than 900 students attend SGS.
80 prefects were inducted.
