Last day for 7% discount Suva rates

- SHALVEEN CHAND SUVA Edited by Jonathan Bryce

Today is expected to be the last day for Suva and Lami ratepayers to get a seven per cent discount for the payment of rates for this year in full. Suva and Lami special administrator Isikeli Tikoduadua said the rates had remained the same over the past six years.

He said people paid their rates in full before February 28 would get a seven per cent discount.

“The discount will continue in March, it will be only four per cent for rates that would be paid in full,” he said.

“To make it easier for ratepayers to pay, we are now having our cashiers open on Saturdays until

1pm and on weekdays until

5.30pm.”

Mr Tikoduadua said the council was grateful to all ratepayers who had made the efforts in settling defaulting rates in January and February.

He said Suva had very good ratepayers as a large majority made sure rates were up to date.

The Suva City Council collects around $13 million annually in rates. In excess of $30 million is owed in arrears which the council is working with ratepayers to collect. The council has also asked ratepayers to be wary of the change in the financial year. This means all municipal councils would align their financial year with the Government’s to end on July 31.

This means that starting in August, rates collection would start again for the new year and rates for this year have to be paid by July 31, 2021.

The discount will continue in March, it will be only four per cent for rates that would be paid in full. Isikeli Tikoduadua Suva and Lami special administrator
