Students of Nukubulu District School in the interior of Cakaudrove will soon receive new sets of furniture.

The sets of furniture have been handed over to the Ministry of Education from the Ba Riverside Carnival committee on Wednesday. However, it is yet to be determined when the shipment of desks and chairs will be sent to the school. Ba Riverside Carnival chairman Arvind Singh said the desks and chairs handed over were worth $4950

“We, the executives and committee members were very thoughtful about the idea brought to us by the CEO, Ba Town Council. We are with you and we will support this cause because it is a worthy cause,” he said

While receiving the furniture, the Minister for Education, Heritage and Arts, Rosy Akbar, acknowledged the timely assistance as Nukubulu District School was one of the many schools damaged after cyclones Yasa and Ana.

So far, she said, more than 2000 desks and chairs were supplied to schools after Cyclone Ana.

“So, when we reopened after Ana,

we made sure that every school was fully equipped with new sets of furniture,” the minister said. “We did that with our donors, we did that with our ministry funds, but every child who went to school after reopening was assured of a new desk and chair and a comfortable classroom.”

She said it was important to invest in education by providing a conducive learning environment.

“The little we give makes a huge difference to somebody who’s at the receiving end, whether it’s one desk, chair or hundred desks, chair, whether it’s a book, pen, a bag, a pair of shoes or uniform, to children it matters,” Ms Akbar said.
