In my time that I have travelled through the journey of life as a Human Resource Professional and more specifically having played the role of a Motivational Corporate Trainer (Rather a better word being, Facilitator-Observer and Feedback Provider) across various organizations and universities, I have come to the realization that any organization large or small must strengthen within itself its Human Resource Department or function. However when I say this I also intend to more specifically mention the importance of the role of the Human Resource Head as a ‘driver’ for enhancing people development and people productivity.

Through this column and the one I would be writing next week, I would like to emphasize and highlight some of the important and developmental initiatives that an HR Head must awaken and implement within his organization.

SWOT for the HR Team- The first thing that an HR Head must do is to look within and by this I mean that he/she must understand and analyse his/ her own team members. Within his/her team he/ she would have people looking after various HR activities, for example, Recruitment, Administration, Training and Pay roll and therefore it is extremely vital that the first thing the Head of HR must do is a get to know the Strength and Weaknesses (Areas of Improvement) of each and every member of his/ her team despite some of them located at different branches across the country.

The most effective way of getting to know your team members is through the SWOT, which means helping them to identify their Strengths; Weaknesses; Opportunities and Threats. What is also important to note is that the HR Head must himself also do his own SWOT analysis simultaneously with his team to help acquire tremendous clarity and insight about each and every employee.

Upon the completion of the SWOT analysis the HR Head would then be able to compile relevant and progressive data about his entire team as well as about himself and this information can and will surely help him to know how to make his team better and stronger than before.
