Namatakula-based Ratu Filise rugby sevens team took out the $5000 prize money after winning the Suva ‘Rise Fiji Rise’ 7s tournament at Nasau Park, Levuka, yesterday, Ratu Filise beat Red Diamond 17-7 in the Cup final while Uluinakau Babaas upset Police Blue 21-17 to finish third.

The Bowl was won by Dominion Brothers who beat Ovalau Green 12-7 in the final while Lami Cavalier walloped Ovalau Black 22-5 to claim the Shield final.

The tournament was organised by the Suva Rugby Union with all the proceeds going to those who have been severely affected by TC Yasa and Ana

It is time to dust off the cobwebs from a long off season as clubs affiliated to the Nasinu Rugby Union prepare for its club competitio­n.

Fifteen teams affiliated to the NRU played in a rugby 13s competitio­n at the University of the South Pacific grounds, Suva, yesterday.

Speaking to Paula Biu said was designed teams’ fitness levels.

“We’ve designed this 13-a-side tournament to dust off the cobwebs from the holiday season and get the teams and players switched on for the new rugby season,” the former Flying Fijians prop said. “The idea was to give the forwards some opportunit­ies to run and test their speed. It will help these teams acclimatis­e themselves

“Now we’ll start our Rami Sami weekly competitio­n next week and then we’ll continue on to July. This is only if nothing drastic like the pandemic or weather happens. The next competitio­n is the Ram Sami Challenge.”

This will help them prepare for the Vodafone Vanua Challenge.

“All teams playing in the Vodafone Vanua Cup aims to play in the Skipper Cup competitio­n the following season. For our club competitio­n we want to achieve what we want. There is a lot of improvemen­t from time to time and the teams and players are playing good rugby.”
