Savneel Sangeet Kumar is the new kid on the block in the crowded political space.

At 31 and still an eligible bachelor, the Sigatoka man from Natadola Beach, epitomises the true Nadro spirit. He is unfazed by the political giants who dominate domestic politics and has announced that work has begun to set up a proposed new party, the proposed Fijian National Congress, to represent the youths of this country.

The former school teacher resigned from teaching in 2019. He wanted to return to teaching in 2020 but could not get a posting so he decided to take on the challenge for young people to enter politics.

He believes that youths should be part of the national decisionmaking process to train them for future leadership roles. Although he personally likes the communist ideology, he says the members of the proposed party will determine their policies and the platform for the General Election next year. Turning the spotlight on youths his announcement about the proposed party came at the same time when Youth Minister, Parveen Bala, made a ministerial statement in Parliament yesterday about youth empowerment in national efforts to achieve sustainable development goals.

Mr Bala said the youths should be partners in areas like climate change.

That is music in Mr Kumar’s ears. He believes we have been giving lip service to youth involvement.
