HOLI DIVERSITY ON DISPLAY
FIJIAN STUDENTS FROM ALL BACKGROUNDS MARK THE ANNUAL HINDU FESTIVAL WITH TEACHERS IN SCHOOLS
Excitement overwhelmed Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Primary School as students celebrated Holi yesterday.
The annual Hindu festival saw students sing, perform dance items and paint colours on each other. Assistant head teacher Radha Kumar said the festival was to create a learning platform for the school’s students and bring together students of different backgrounds.
“This is a multicultural school and the festival is to bring colours and fun into each student despite the challenges that the world is currently facing,” Mrs Kumar said. Holi is a popular ancient Hindu festival, also known as the “festival of love”, the “festival of colours”, and the “festival of spring”.
The festival celebrates the eternal and divine love of Radha and Krishna. It also signifies the triumph of good over evil.
Rishikul Primary School
Rishikual Primary School was also among the many schools celebrating Holi.
Head teacher Rishi Chand said: “Holi is the triumph of good over evil and it teaches us as individuals to know the value of love, unity and happiness.”
With a school population of 1600 students, Mr Chand was also surprised to see the many hidden talents revealed as students took part in the celebration.
“Children learn from each other and in this way, they are able to go out into their own communities and spread the values and knowledge of Holi and how it brings people together,” he said.
“I saw students play the instruments very well, they knew the art of singing and danced quite well and that was an empowerment to continue to nurture their talents. “This promotes peace and prosperity and that is what we need at this point of time.”
