Minister for Education, Rosy Akbar has warned Heads of school to look into the supervision of their students while travelling in public transport. This comes after a video was circulated on social media showing students from a prominent high school in Ba hanging from a KBL bus after the Ba zone in Lautoka last week.

“School heads need to step up in monitoring student’s behaviour because we are looking into establishing steps to be taken against the schools,” Minister Akbar said.

“We have a Behaviour Management policy that is serious about students acting rowdy in buses and we advise the bus companies to go to the nearest police station if they are in that situation.

“Do not risk your lives and the lives of other passengers,” she said.

KBL Busses Executive Chairman Nisar Ali Shah urged students travelling in buses to sporting events to act responsibly.

The footage showed a student standing at the entrance of the bus and attempting to kick traffic cones on the road while hanging from the bus.

“I’ve already spoken to the Principal and they are going to discipline the students and talk to the teachers if any were present in the bus. They didn’t hassle the driver at all, they were just rowdy,” Mr Ali said.

“The bus was not damaged, but it was a very unsafe ride, and I don’t know where the teachers were, but the Principal said she will talk to the parents and do the right thing.

“Everybody has to be a responsible citizen. Police can’t be sitting in all the buses.”

He said it was not the first time students have behaved in a rowdy manner while on board a KBL bus.
