Taoi ends 39 years of service, finds new goal
Savenaca Taoi receives a gift from Suva and Lami special administrator Isikeli Tikoduadua on behalf of the Suva City Council.
After serving the Suva City Council for 39 years, Savenaca Taoi called it a day on Wednesday.
On Thursday, Mr Taoi was farewelled by the Council. He is one of the longest serving staff members.
“I am grateful for the leadership during my time at the Council. The people at the helm have been kind to me and they have allowed me to progress,” he said. Mr Taoi started his career at the Council’s depot in Samabula in 1982 and slowly moved up the ranks to becoming a key part of the Council.
The 60-year-old aims to return to his village in Vanuavatu in Lau. He is among the driving forces in Vanuavatu who are behind the push to put an end to night diving.
Mr Taoi believes that the practice is a threat to the village’s biodiversity.
Suva and Lami special administrator Isikeli Tikoduadua said Mr Taoi in his 39 years of service never once had to be called up for a disciplinary matter.
“Mr Taoi’s service shows that the Council is an equal opportunity employer which allows staff to progress and grow with the Council,” he said.
“We are also proud that he has chosen to champion an environmental issue that would ensure abundance of food for his village and also maintain the biodiversity.” Mr Taoi served under three lord mayors which included Bob Kumar, Peni Volavola and Chandu Umaria.
