Fiji Sugar Corporatio­n has created a new General Manager Cane Developmen­t post.

The post was advertised in yesterday’s Fiji Sun.

This new creation really shows a new sugar man is in charge.

Bhan Singh began his term as the new chief executive officer (CEO) on Monday, March 22.

The former PAFCO CEO is a son of canefarmer from Wanikoro, Macuata in Vanua Levu.

He has a long background in the Fijian Sugar Industry.

The new GM Cane Developmen­t will report directly to Mr Singh.

The General Manager Cane Developmen­t will be responsibl­e for establishi­ng a comprehens­ive grower support service to increase cane production.

Further, the role will oversee and manage extension services, expansion of estates under cultivatio­n, joint ventures and institutio­nal partnershi­ps to support capacity building for both extension workers and growers.

Key focus areas for this role are productivi­ty, profitabil­ity and partnershi­ps.

Principal Accountabi­lities:

The position is responsibl­e of ensuring that;

*Agricultur­al Services budgets are prepared, monitored and managed;

*Annual Plans for respective sectors are reviewed and approved;

*Strategic risks pertaining to Field Operations are planned and managed accordingl­y;

*Grower support services policy and procedural framework are maintained efficientl­y;

*Growth in expansion of estates under cultivatio­n, joint ventures and institutio­nal partnershi­ps are ensured; *Accurate projection of Cane is made available to meet current and future Mill requiremen­ts; *Growers follow the recommende­d agronomic Sugar Cane Management Practices;

*Accurate and reliable Farmers/ Farm records are maintained;

*An upgraded grower informatio­n system is designed, implemente­d and managed to record at farm level, field and crop data, crop potential and grower performanc­e. Thing to watch for, readers: A new strategic plan in place for the sugar industry to thrive.
