There’s a big push for a Savusavu Community and Recreation Centre for the Hidden Paradise.

The idea has received the backing of the Savusavu Town Council, prominent business persons in Savusavu and locals.

This recreational facility would include basketball, netball and volleyball courts, a swimming pool and a children’s park.

American couple and former film directors, Megan and Dan Keller, hope to make this dream a community-driven initiative that benefits Savusavu. They have been living in Savusavu for three years.

The Kellers hope like-minded people will collaborate to pledge their support.

“These centre will boost Savusavu’s economic activity, boost mental health and well-being, and reduce crime rate as youths become actively engaged in sporting events,” Ms Keller said.

The couple said the project was likely to be rolled out in phases, with phase one ready to be implemented.

Phase one includes two official size volleyball courts (equipment included); electrical lighting design; and play structure for two to 12-year-olds. This is estimated at $25,000 to $30,000.

However, there is the challenge of where the centre would be located. A meeting was held this week between the couple, the council’s chief executive officer Sima Shiwani Dutt, Heron Enterprises Pte Limited and Ki-Maren Fiji Pte Limited Managing Director Aren Nunnink.

Shine a Light understands the parties are looking for an available piece of land next to Ganilau Park.

The only available piece of land is located on the west of Ganilau Park, which is being leased to Helipro Fiji.
