Stop Pollution Now Before it Becomes a Norm: Tikoduadua
People should stop throwing rubbish everywhere before it becomes a norm says Suva and Lami special administrator chair Isikeli Tikoduadua.
Yesterday morning, more than 100 people gathered to clean up the Lami foreshore. Mr Tikoduadua thanked everyone that took time out from their Saturday to do something for Fiji.
“It was a joint venture, and we are really grateful that people have taken the initiative to do something like this,” Mr Tikoduadua said.
“There are a lot of youths who are part of the clean up campaign and this shows that the youths are aware that we need to protect our planet.
“Cleanups like this are a national affair and should be done in regular basis.
“If we continue to throw rubbish carelessly it will become a norm.”
President for the Lami paddlers club (also known as team Waitui) Talei Wilson said everyone needed to be mindful of where they throw rubbish.
“We have 35 members who are part of the cleanup today and most of us live in the area,” Ms Wilson said.
“We had to start early because have to paddle in the high tide, so we went right up to Qauia Village bridge and a few of the members found sacks of nappies.
“The rubbish that is thrown at the river in Qauia will end up at the Lami foreshore and it is not a good sight to look at.
“Our carelessness will have a long effect and the future generation will suffer because of the bad decisions we made, and that is not fair on them.
“If we do not start now then we are looking at big chaos in the future.
“If we do not work together to have a clean environment then we will not be able to enjoy a clean river to swim in.”
