We want the best! This was the statement made by the Tailevu Education Committee chairman Akanisi Kedrayate to the Tailevu Provincial Council 2021 Scholarship recipients yesterday.

The Tailevu Provincial Council had allocated $46,000 for the scholarships, which were handed out yesterday. Seventy-seven university students from the province received their formal scholarship agreement from the Tailevu Education

Committee in a ceremony held at the Ratu Cakobau House in Nausori.

Ms Kedrayate said the 77 were chosen out of the close to 300 applicants they received this year. While speaking to the recipients, she reminded them that the funding of the scholarship came directly from men and women of Tailevu, with no outside donors and sponsors.

“Remember this money came from the sweat that your families, village and districts have contributed towards the province fund,” she said. |

“A big village would give $3000, some villages would give $2000 while a small village would give $1000 in order to finance this scholarship fund and that is how we are able to give you scholarships today. “We are also grateful to Tailevu Holdings for supporting us with some financial help that has enabled us to continue funding your education.”

She said the scholarship for each student was given semester wise. “When the students finish a semester, they have to come back to us with their results and if they have done well then we will continue the assistance in the next semester, but if they fail they will have to re-do the units they have failed with their own expenses and they can re-apply when they have passed the units.

“We do not give out the scholarship for the whole year, we review the recipient’s performance every month.”

She added that the scholarship was established in 2019 and it was just in its second year of being rolled out.
