First win for Babasiga Lions

The Labasa football team finally managed to win their first match in the Digicel Premier League defeating a strong Nadroga side 1-0 yesterday.

The Babasiga Lions scored their winning goal in the second half as a lapse of concentrat­ion in the Nadroga defence saw Melvin Mani grabbing the winner.

What happened: Nadroga started the game strongly as they were able to control the midfield play. Labasa regained momentum in the later stages of the game and created a few good chances for themselves.

In the second half, Labasa started to bring in their A-game as they applied pressure on the Nadroga defence and Mani was awarded a golden opportunit­y and he made sure the Babasiga Lions grabbed its first goal in the DPG.

In the final 10 minutes of the game, Labasa were under constant pressure as the Stallions searched for the equaliser however the Northerner­s held on to the win. Halftime: Labasa 0-0 Nadroga Comments: Labasa coach, Ravneel Pratap said: “We played a good game as we had worked really hard for the win.”

Nadroga coach Ramesh Sharma said: “We missed a number of chances especially in the second half as we could have won today.”
