Business Owner Says CCTV Cameras Are Worth the Investment

The installation of CCTV cameras inside a Suva mini mart, provides extra protection for the Elim Mini Mart staff.

Being in the area for more than 10 years, business owner Lusi Wu says shoplifting has been a daily issue to her business.

She says some of the perpetrators enter her shop, pretend to look around to buy something and then run out the door when they are busy serving a customer.

“Many times, we used the CCTV cameras to capture these activities and we alert the Police but because it has become a common issue, Police can’t do much,” Mrs Wu said.

“Sometimes these perpetrators come in groups of three or four with their faces covered,” she said.

“It worries me that these people roam freely in town after doing these kinds of activities. It’s already a struggle running a business during this pandemic time and to have these people steal from us just adds on to the struggle.”

Mrs Wu also operates a clothing store next door that employs three staff. She installed CCTV cameras to monitor daily operations in her two outlets however, with the frequency of shop lifting, these cameras provide extra security.

She adds that perpetrators have become smart in the way they try to avoid the angle of CCTV cameras. “We have shared some of our footage to the Police to help in their investigations and we always make sure that we have backup footage with us,” she said.

Mrs Wun says despite these challenges, her convenience store continues to operate; she encourages other businesses to invest in installing CCTV cameras in their shops for safety and security.
