FUTURE FARMS MAKES ORGANIC-RICH COMPOST

-

Future Farms Pte Limited (FFL) trading as Rooster Poultry is transforming poultry waste into a valuable resource by modernising the process of chicken litter waste into a value-added product.

The end result is a nutrient rich organic compost.

This was made possible through a green project facilitated by Fiji National University’s National Training & Productivity Centre and sponsored by Asian Productivity Organisation (APO).

“The inception started in 2017 and the project was completed in 2020. This is not the end. We hope to develop it further into a pelleted organic fertiliser.”

Mr Raniga said he hopes this will replace chemical fertilizers that are being used by most farmers today.

“It is organic, and it enriches the soil. We hope this will also help the sugar industry and is cheaper.”

He added this has opened opportunities to export the organic fertilizer which fetches close to US$500 a tonne into South East Asia.

APO provided an Expert out of South Australia to provide technical expertise for the project. The end result is an import quality organic compost produced right here in Fiji and at a fraction of the price. The brand name of the product is ‘Compost Magic’ and for more details, visit the Compost Magic Facebook page.

Director National Training and Productivity Centre, Fiji National University, Head of National Productivity Organisation for Fiji, and APO Alternate director for Fiji Isimeli Tagicakiverata said this project will also build the Future Farms brand by showing that it is a good steward of resources.

“Future Farms have created tangible positive changes throughout the company by improving animal welfare and environmental management.

“They have also reduced water and soil contamination, recycling nutrients and developing updated policies and ultimately setting new strategic directions.”

The Chicken Litter Composting has been a result of more than 20 months of implementation.s. SUSANA HIRST-TUILAU
