Follow Social Distancing Rules or Face Charges: Public Warned
People found not following social distancing regulations within the Central Business District (CBD) such as in supermarkets and markets could be charged.
Acting Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu said this also goes for businesses that fail to have proper markings to display the two-metre social distancing.
Suva City Council and the Fiji Police Force met yesterday to discuss the enforcement of COVID guidelines of social distancing and mask-wearing on public streets within the CBD.
Suva and Lami special administrator Isikeli Tikoduadua said the meeting noted that all efforts have been made to create awareness in the communities, and enforcement shall now be greatly strengthened. “Movement within the concentrated zones, in particular the supermarkets areas, shall be effectively managed,” he said.
“Suva City Council, with immediate effect, will hold a meeting with supermarket managers to ensure that foot traffic generated outside supermarkets are effectively managed and controlled as per the COVID-19 guidelines”.
He said they will be working closely with the Fiji Police Force to ensure that the same measures are stringently applied at the Suva Market and the Suva Bus Station. “Footpaths at strategic locations will be marked by the Business Centres, Fiji Roads Authority and the Suva City Council,” he said.
He said they appreciated the commitment of the Fiji Police Force in maintaining law and order within the Suva City area and the support provided by the Suva Retailers Association.
