In order to send out a strong message, seven people were remanded by Magistrates Court in Labasa, for failing to comply with public health protection notice.
Fero Caba, Laisiasa Maduanabarua, Tomasi Korovakaturaga, Semi Vuniwai, Etuate Rokomatanivai, Sairusi Kauvere and Simione Cerewawa appeared before Magistrate Bimsara Jagodage yesterday.
Police Prosecutor Sergeant Vignesh Prasad told the court that on Tuesday (May 4) the fishermen gathered at Susan Cava’s house in Naduri Village, Labasa.
He stated that they were drinking kava and after 1am started drinking rice whiskey, thereby failing to comply with the public health protection notice issued by the Permanent Secretary for Health and Medical Services.
He added the next morning they were arrested after the security officer of the village heard them shouting in a house and informed the Police.
Magistrate Jagodage told them it was a serious offence and it was sad to note that despite several reminders, people still don’t take heed.
They all opted for Legal Adi Commission counsel.
The case has been adjourned to May 18.
