- MARAIA VULA SUVA Feedback: maraia.vula@fijisun.com.fj

The two tower cranes used for constructing the WG Friendship Plaza steel framed structure has been dismantled. This after the plaza developer completed the construction of its 28 storey high steel structure.

Julian Yuen, a representative of WG Friendship Plaza thanked relevant agencies for their swift assistance in bringing in two crane Dismantle Operators from China. “We have completed building the sky high WG Friendship Plaza tall steel structure.

“We are now doing the glass glazing before we move into the interior designs.

“We had seeked assistance from the Ministry of Commerce, Trade, Tourism and Transport, Department of Immigration and Investment Fiji to bring in the two Chinese crane Dismantle Operators.

“The cranes we were using was brought in from China. “So it needed a specialised touch to dismantle it in an efficient and timely manner.

“We secured their 30 days work permits to dismantle the cranes. They completed the task in just six days well in advance of the projected 10 days of dismantling the cranes. “Now they are just waiting to fly back to China.

“We paid for their travel, accommodation and quarantine expenses as well.”

Mr Yuen noted that they had received a lot of public scrutiny over the two tower cranes hanging from the sky during the cyclone season.

“What these people don’t understand is that in order to build any tall structures, for example more than 10 storeys high, we need to use a tower crane.

“We were not the only one using tower cranes, the contractors at FHL Tower or MHCC were using it too, so why were we being scrutinised?

“As developers and contractors we need to ensure that the cranes have a solid foundation and strong support to ensure that it doesn’t collapse.

“We followed all the safety protocols and we are happy that there was no accident involving our cranes.

“Again we would like to thank these Government agencies for their swift action and assitance.”
