An attempt to break into a family vehicle and home in Tacirua East, Suva was unsuccessful when a family member woke up.

Amit Kumar recalls that it was around 3am last Friday when three men allegedly tried to break into Kumar’s vehicle.

However, this attempt was foiled when Mr Kumar woke up.

He said two of the men ran towards Tamavua Primary School and the other man ran towards Tacirua Heights.

The attempt did not stop there. Mr Kumar, who operates a shop from his premises, said at around 6am that same day, someone turned their CCTV cameras and managed to unlock their burglar grill door.

“We were awake and heard the grill. By the time we reached the door, the man ran off, he ran off with the lock,” he said.

Mr Kumar said the matter was reported to Police and he was happy with the work done by them. On Monday, May 3, a few vehicles were also broken into.

Resident, Mahendra Prasad, said it was a worry that the incidents were happening during curfew hours. “There are some people who will stop at nothing to take advantage of others hard work. These people think that it was easy for us. We work hard and then get ripped off by these unscrupulous people,” he said.

Mr Prasad said because of COVID-19 most people were at home, so thieves roamed the streets during curfew hours.

He said break-ins were very common in the area because of the several getaway tracks or shortcuts. Police spokesperson Savaira Tabua said communities needed to work together and with Police. Edited by Losirene Lacanivalu
