Today we wish all our mothers a Happy Mother’s Day which they celebrate tomorrow. If there is one group that bears the full brunt of the impact of COVID-19 it is our mothers.

They usually worry about putting food on the table and the health and well-being of every member of the family.

When their sole breadwinner husbands lose their jobs or work on reduced hours, it is them who worry the most.

That’s a normal mother’s instinct, a divine trait that no one can take away from them.

They will sacrifice for the sake of their family. So on this Mother’s Day let’s make it a special day that they will always remember.

While gifts are nice, what they may really need is to feel of our love that money cannot buy.

We show it by how we treat them not just one day but every day, seven days a week and 365 days in a year.

This is especially important in homes where the mothers are single or widows.

They single handedly look after their children and grandchildren too in some cases at the expense of their personal happiness.

They are the unsung heroines of our communities. One day is not enough to pay tribute to our mothers.

It should be every day. They deserve praise and recognition for their selfless service because they are the backbone of the family.

A family without the mother encounters more problems than a family without the father.

It is why we should all condemn violence against women, girls and children.

No mother deserves to be physically or emotionally abused under any circumstances.

Let’s make this Mother’s Day a new milestone - the start of a new journey where we change our mindset and treat our mothers as a national treasure. It means we will honour and respect them with word and deed.

We will not just see or talk to them once a year if they are living alone in their twilight years but we will regularly maintain contact through the various communication platforms.

Let’s not forget those in managed facilities like special homes.

Some are lonely and love to hear from their loved ones or see them face to face.

Let’s make this Mother’s Day a day to remember.
