200 FOOD PACKS TO LAUTOKA FAMILIES

- SALOTE QALUBAU LAUTOKA Edited by Selita Rabuku

More than 200 families in the Vunato, Natabua and Saweni areas in Lautoka received food packs, thanks to three businessmen.

JPT Enterprise Director Paul Kim, Moutasim Akash Directors and Mahubab Parash of Amazing Food and Plastic Group distributed the packs worth more than $5000.

It included rice, sugar, biscuits, flour, tea, oil, powdered milk and cassava.

Mr Kim said a certain amount of the donation towards the food packs came from AKL International Church in New Zealand.

“We are so grateful to the Church in New Zealand who have continued to support our work in reaching out to needy families in Fiji,” he said. The Church and Mr Kim had also assisted families affected by Tropical Cyclone Yasa in Vanualevu and settlements in Lautoka.

Mr Akash said the company normally engaged residents of Vunato Settlement to collect scrap metal from the nearby rubbish dump in exchange for money.

“Because of the Government’s decision we cannot operate so we stopped buying the scrap metal, but they kept calling us requesting for help so it’s our responsibility to help them during this COVID situation,” he said.

“We had some communication with the Commissioner West’s office before so he came to our yard yesterday and they gave us a plan for distribution.”

Vunato settlement headman Jone Rabici acknowledged the assistance.

“We are really thankful for the rations given today because a lot of the households staying here are not working so it’s a big blessing for them,” he said.
