Team Fiji men’s rugby sevens rising star Sireli Maqala has turned down his contract to play for French club Bayonne. Instead, he has opted to play for the Fijian Drua in next year’s Super Rugby competition. This was revealed to SUNsports yesterday by his dad Sisa Ramuadrau.

“Maqala will not be going to France but rather Fiji Rugby has great plans for him to play for the Drua in the Super Rugby,” Ramuadrau said.

“Maqala is young and also enthusiastic in playing for Fiji at next year’s Sevens Rugby World Cup and the Commonwealth Games.” Maqala and his team-mates today leave their quarantine facility in Nadi after they have completed their 14 days.

On his return to Labasa on Saturday, Maqala will have to undergo another four days of quarantine at a hotel there.

Speaking to SUNsports yesterday Ramuadrau said they are counting down on his son’s return after more than four months of separation.

“To my understanding, the Fiji sevens rugby team will leave the quarantine facility at 5am tomorrow (Friday),” he said.

“My son will stay for another night in Viti Levu and will fly to Labasa on Saturday morning.

“He will be picked up by the COVID-19 Task Force and escorted to a hotel in Labasa where he will be quarantined for another four days.”

Ramuadrau said Maqala would come out of quarantine on Thursday and spend some quality time with the family.

“We’re looking of hosting a Thanksgiving Church Service. Giving thanks to God for the sacrifices and the achievements of my son. It will be a good day for us and we will be at home with him.”
