Island vaccination response impresses village headman

- LAISA LUI LABASA Edited by Rayape Karavaki

Yadua Island in Vuya, Bua has reached 98 per cent of the total population to be fully vaccinated.

Village headman, Maleli Nawai, said he was impressed to witness the response from the villagers who came forward in numbers to receive their vaccination when the Vaccination team arrived at the village hall.

“Children from 18 years and above had their first dose in July and received their second dose in September,” Mr Nawai said.

“Five students of Labasa College from 15 to17 years and a pregnant woman received their first dose of the Moderna vaccine in the first week of October.

“I am proud of the 175 villagers that have taken both their jabs of the COVID-19 vaccine.

“This would allow us to move freely to Vanua Levu and have access to the services that we need,” he said.

Mr Nawai said that it is paramount for the villagers to be vaccinated before they interact with other people from outer islands.

However, the remaining villagers that are yet to be vaccinated were influenced by fake news and conspiracy theories on social media.
