Our star striker Roy Krishna will join the Digicel national football team a week before the Oceania qualifiers for the 2022 FIFA World Cup gets underway.

This was confirmed yesterday by national team manager, Anushil Kumar.

Kumar said they had started preparations for the qualifiers to be staged in Qatar in March.

He confirmed that the squad are in camp at the Fiji Football Association Academy in Ba and now they have increased the number from 14 to 20 players.

“We started our camp last week with 14 players who were not working, this was after getting the greenlight from the Fiji National Sports Commission,” Kumar told Fiji FA Media.

“Today we have 20 players after getting their leave approval from the Fiji Police Force.

“We are now waiting for the teachers to get their release while our Northern players are training under our second assistant coach Senaila Bera in Labasa.”

Kumar said the overseas-based players are going to be called in when the border opens.

Meanwhile, head coach Flemming Serristlev is impressed with the players’ fitness level.

He said the players focused on the physical preparation last week due to non-contact restrictions.

“I’m happy that players were following their training schedules during the five months of lockdown,” said Serristlev

“I’m equally happy that we have been given the greenlight to play contact sports now which will allow us to focus on the playing philosophy.

“The boys have not touched the ball for the past six months so we are happy that we will be able to play football now.”

The team will break camp next week for the resumption of Digicel Premier League and will report back to camp in November.
