Shanaka leads Sri Lanka

Colombo: Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) Board Cricket Selection Committee has announced the final 15-man Sri Lanka team squad for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2021 which begins on October 17 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Oman.

Sri Lanka and seven other teams are placed in the qualifying round one of the matches.

In June 2021, the ICC announced that the tournament had been moved to the United Arab Emirates due to growing concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic situation in India.

The tournament is scheduled to begin on October 17, with the tournament’s final scheduled to be played on November 14.

The preliminar­y rounds of the tournament are set to be shared between the UAE and Oman.

Sri Lanka are in Group A of round one matches which also has Ireland, Namibia, and the Netherland­s. Sri Lanka will face Namibia on October 18 in Abu Dhabi.

Then they will square off against Ireland on October 20, also in Abu Dhabi, and last they will face the Netherland­s on October 22 in Sharjah.

The top two ranked teams will then proceed to the Super 12s round.

Sri Lanka had initially named 20 players in their probable squad for the T20 World Cup 2021 after adding five more names a few days ago.

Now the whole squad has been trimmed to 15 with Dasun Shanaka being named captain and Dhananjaya de Silva appointed as the vice-captain.

The experience­d duo of Kusal Perera and Dinesh Chandimal were also named in the final squad along with the young Pathum Nissanka, Avishka Fernando,

Bhanuka Rajapaksa was picked as the batters. Charith Asalanka, Wanindu Hasaranga and Chamika Karunaratn­e were named as the all-rounders.

Dushmantha Chameera, Lahiru Kumara, Maheesh Theekshana, and Akila Dananjaya along with Binura Fernando rounded up the Sri Lanka T20 World Cup 2021 squad.
