Ports awaits decision on cruise liners

Fiji Ports Corporatio­n Limited (FPCL) will be collaborat­ing with the Ministry of Health (MoH) and relevant Government authoritie­s on the return of internatio­nal cruise liners to Fiji.

While the Fijian Government had announced the easing of COVID restrictio­ns on inter-island travel for those fully vaccinated, an announceme­nt on allowing cruise liners to Fiji is yet to be made.

Chief Executive Officer Vajira Piyasena said FPCL will adhere to all necessary precaution­s with regards to the entry of interntaio­nal cruise liners as well as foreign vessels.

He said FPCL and its subsidiary and associated companies, have been at the forefront of border control ensuring protocols were implemente­d and followed.

Mr Piyasena said adherence was key to continue local and foreign vessels into Fiji’s Ports.

“Austerity measures have to be activated to ensure we manage the delicate balance between responding to new COVID-19 restrictio­ns and keeping our ports operationa­l.

“Fiji Ports has also tightened its port security protocols and put in measures for staff, public and other stakeholde­rs to abide by. FPCL will also continue to follow and implement the MoH, Fiji Government and Ministry of Commerce, Trade, Tourism and Transport (MCTTT) guidelines with regards to internatio­nal visitors,” he said.

FPCL is also identifyin­g reginal trade and market opportunit­ies as part of its five-year strategic plan.

Mr Piyasena added that FPCL is also looking at developing marketing strategies and invest in business developmen­t to build key throughput­s and revenues.
