Travellers from Australia are expected to make up more than half the number of tourist arrivals to Fiji in the lead up to July 2022.

Tourism Fiji has said.Chief executive officer, Brent Hill’s comments followed the travel opening from Australia.

“We have a target of 119,000 by July, 2022, which we’re on track with, and Australia being well over half,” he said.

“It’s really exciting for us as we can see overseas travel being normalised, and more people travelling, which is good for Fiji.”

Tourism Fiji is working to bring more tourists from Europe and Asia, many of whom connect via Australia, which makes the move significant for Fiji, Mr Hill said.

In January, Fiji was Australia’s most sought after travel destination, accounting for 15 per cent of all outbound travel, he said.

“This fills us with optimism that our plans are working well,” Mr Hill said.

Fiji Airways, the leader and administer of the Recovery Rebate Package programme, said it was grateful to the Government of Fiji for tax reductions, which enabled Fiji Airways and the hotels to reduce holiday package prices, to entice tourists to Fiji.

The stipend for the programme is shared between Fiji Airways and hotels, for all enticing holiday packages developed and sold, the national airline said.

Luxury Escapes, a key partner out of Australia, sold over 100,000 room nights for stays, from when borders opened on December 1, and first quarter 2022.

“We expect this to increase once Australia opens on February 21 and restrictions ease,” Fiji Airways said.

“We are grateful for the $60 million recovery rebate package, which will provide a further $400 stipend per passenger for the first 150,000 passengers who booked, travelled and stayed in Fiji using a holiday package.”
