Samabula family happy to host Eid celebrations this year
The removal of COVID-19 restrictions has allowed some sense of normalcy to host events such Eid celebrations. For Majid Shahzad and his family, the special occasion will bring together relatives and friends to their home in Samabula.
“We plan to cook some food and special sweets and invite all my friends and relatives to come home and celebrate Eid al-Fitr this year with us,” Mr Shahzad said.
“It has been two years since we celebrated Eid properly with friends and family at home because of the pandemic so this year, the celebration will in a way be like a back to normal celebration.
“Although we are not fully out of the pandemic, the removal of the restrictions has given us some sense of normalcy so we want to celebrate that.”
Last year, like many families, Mr Shahzad had marked Eid through zoom calls to relatives in Fiji and abroad.
Eid is one of two major festivals in the Islamic calendar that is a time when families get together and celebrate.
Mr Shahzad said families share the happiness of Eid with friends, families, neighbors and the community as whole.
“It’ll be more on self reflection and seeing how better we can help each other in our communities particularly those who are not so fortunate.
“For the past years, it was a large family gathering with lots of sweets and delicious food for all our customers and friends who came to our place. Sharing of nice food, sweets particularly Sawai( vermicelli) which is the special of the day.”
He adds that on the day, the family will start with morning prayers followed by receiving guests at their home.
