Celebrating special occasions without your loved ones can be disheartening. For two years, COVID-19 had ruined the happiness of families who couldn’t celebrate Eid due to lockdowns and social gathering restrictions.

But this year, Muslims around the country can finally meet their families and friends without any restrictions.

Shazleen Jasmid was saddened she couldn’t meet her family back in Labasa.

Mrs Jasmid, who stays in Suva, has been looking forward to meet her family.

“I will finally get to meet them because they are heading to Suva for this week. Being with your loved ones for such festival is the joyous moment of all,” she said.

She said Eid was a festival where families could reunite.

“Eid is marked after 30 days of complete fasting. On the day of Eid, Muslim men first gather and pray Namaaz (Islamic worship) to Allah (God) and thank him for giving us strength to fast and pray and for protecting us by all the sins,” she said.

“Eid teaches us to always love each other and to help the poor.”

She also said the first Eid was celebrated by (Peace be upon him) Hazrat Muhammad Mustafa Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam (our prophet).

“He was Allah’s last and final Messenger,” she added.

She said they have prepared a lot of sweets and were ready to serve their guests.

“On this day, our main dish is Sewai (also known as Samai) and we also have sweets like Laddoo, Gulab Jamun, Coconut Ice, Nimkins, Peda, Murku and many more.”

Mrs Jasmid said Muslims also gave donations known as Zakat and Khairat to poor people.

“I would like to wish everyone a very Happy and Safe Eid. I hope everyone’s prayers come true. Always love each other regardless of any race,” she said.
