Apartnership between Australia’s Monash University and the Fiji National University (FNU), on the establishment of the Pacific Island Countries Climate Change Research Centre, creates opportunities for high-quality research on world-leading climate change and adaptation issues.
This was stated yesterday by the Attorney-General and Minister Responsible for Climate Change, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.
The two universities are already co-creating a range of collaborative research projects to kick-start the research centre prior to its formal implementations.
Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said the setup of the research centre was important because it brought together people and expertise from different backgrounds to research more on climate change.
If people do not grasp its importance, he said it would become an untenable situation and slowly an existential threat.
Through the new research centre, researchers will have direct engagement with wide academic networks and better opportunities to collaborate with key industry leaders, donor institutions and world-leading practitioners.
Mr Sayed-Khaiyum was excited about the opportunity in capacity building for policymakers in the Pacific, to liaise with academics from Monash University.
