Be Part of Beauty Services Industry

-

By Rayelene Bennion

The hairdressing and beauty services industry is booming with micro and small sized businesses, not only in Fiji but globally.

There are new enthusiasts entering through small establishments and vast majority run by self-employed hairdressers and beauticians.

Self-employed hairdressers and make-up artists may work in their salon set up at home or at a business premise, they may also work as mobile artists visiting clients at home or at the client’s site. Some may also rent chairs at salons owned by someone else.

While technology has made acquiring equipment and materials easy and convenient, it has also made learning new global trends and traits accessible and fun. However, in this world of cutthroat competition, quality of service wins you the long race.

FNU’s National Training and Productivity Centre has been offering short courses in hairdressing services, make-up and beauty, and Ayurveda therapeutic services for more than seven years.

Amazingly, our enrolment number has also been steadily increasing over the years, especially this year.

We offer our courses in blended mode, which is face-to-face, online, and a combination of both. We also offer flexible time frames that can be personalised our students for each participants upon completion of this qualification.

Student Success Story

The pandemic challenged many

people to their best to survive as the world came to a standstill. Many lost their jobs, and many closed their business and sent workers home. One of them were Ms. Nikita Devi, who closed her micro business Simiz Styling Hair and Beauty Salon in 2021 as Fiji’s economy got hit by COVID restrictions and closures.

“It was difficult to pay rent because I was not generating revenue,” Ms Devi said.

“I started the business in 2005 and it was such a difficult situation to keep the business running amidst the restrictions. Safety was paramount, and I had to rethink operating my business.

“As restrictions lifted, I did not have funds on hand to pay for rent and auxiliary expenses. So I decided to look for an employment and collect the required amount.”

She was grateful to have gained an employment at a barbershop in Nadi, and she did side-hustles to collect funds. It didn’t take long for Ms Devi reopened her business once again last month after gathering her start-up funds.

Ms Devi went through NTPC’s Hair, Beauty Therapy and Spa Training Academy in 2016 having completed Certificate of Attainment

in Hairdressing.

“The course uplifted my skills and talent where I was able to explore my skills immensely. This course really boosted my confidence. The learning experience was amazing and it allowed me to explore my talents through the guidance provided. The training instructor was friendly and patient, and she was clear with her delivery and her explanations that I grasped the concepts easily.”

She says her strength lies in herself.

“Believe in yourself, believe in what you do, stay focused and you will certainly accomplish your goals in life. And this is what I would like to share with everyone too because I know there are others like me who are struggling to improve their career after the pandemic.”
