Senior Citizens Will Live In New Facility: Minister Akbar
We would not be talking about this situation if our families were more responsible and if our families took care of their own elderly... Rosy Akbar Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation
Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation Rosy Akbar says the Lautoka Golden Age Home is deteriorating because it’s an old structure.
And the ministry will prioritise a new facility for residents.
While speaking in Parliament on Tuesday, Minister Akbar said the Lautoka Home was built in the 1940s and had served as a primary school.
She said in 1960, it was handed over to the Government to serve as a residential home for senior citizens.
“We would not be talking about this situation if our families were more responsible and if our families took care of their own elderly family members,” she said.
“Nevertheless, Government has taken care of the senior citizens who have sought refuge in our three homes.
“Next on our priority list is a new
Golden Age Home facility for our residents in the Western Division and this, we will apply through the normal budgetary process.
“It is very old, but like I said, I can assure the Parliament the quality of service is up to par.
